Different types of Air Compressor Technologies

Air compressors work on different technologies. Each compressor works in some or the other way. Here, in this blog; we will discuss few of the air compressor technologies that are mostly used in today’s industry.  Most of the Air Compressor Manufacturers In India are aware about these technologies.

These are as follows:

Rotary Screw:

Rotary screw air compressors use rotary type, circular movement to compress the air. Capable of running continuously- they don’t need to be shut off and on- these are one of the most popular types of compressors in many industries.

  • The air arrives inside via inlet valve and then it gets funneled through twin helical screws. These are known as rotors that pressurize the air. As the screws turn, it adversely affects the air pressure, i.e. the volume decreases and the air pressure increases.
  • Rotary screw compressors are used when large volume of high pressure air is necessary.

Piston compressor:

The conventional piston compressor is one of the most widely used compressors and has five key parts; a crankshaft, connecting rod, piston, cylinder and valve head. The valve head holds thin metal flaps, the inlet and the discharge valves, at the apex of the cylinder.

One is mounted underneath and the other above the valve plate. As the piston moves down, a vacuum is created above it, allowing outside air atmospheric pressure to push open the inlet valve and fill the area above the piston.

Along with piston moving up, the air above it compresses and then it holds the inlet valve and then pushes the discharge valve open.  The air moves from the discharge port to the tank. With every stroke, more air enters the tank and then the pressure rises.

Scroll compressor:

This type of air compressor is oil free and works in a circular motion. A single spiral shaped rotor oscillates against a fixed similar spiral. As these spirals move against each other, the cavity trapping air between them becomes progressively smaller.

Reduction in volume forces the fixed volume of intake air to increase in pressure.

Centrifugal compressor:

In this type of compressor, air gets drawn in the center of a rotating impeller with radial blades with the help of centrifugal force. This air movement increases pressure and ejects kinetic energy. Before, the air is led into the center of the impeller, the kinetic energy turns into pressure through a diffuse.

Tooth compressors:

In an air compressor, the compression element consists of two rotors that rotate in opposite direction inside a compression chamber. Air is drawn into the compression chamber until the rotors block the inlet.

Vane compressor:

The vane compressor commonly oil lubricated compressors are manufactured using special cast alloys. The rotary vane compressor includes a cylindrical rotor that is placed inside the cavity. The rotor also has a few grooves where vanes are placed. This air then decreases volume and gets pressurized using the rotor’s rotating motion.
