Understanding The Reciprocating Air Compressor

Single and Two Stage Air Compressor

The reciprocating air compressor is a direct displacement mechanism that reduces the amount of air to increase the pressure. The compressed air is stored in a large steel container and discharged at its place of use via a steel pipe equipped with a control valve.

Since compressed air has many applications in modern industry, reciprocity is in high demand. Their robust construction and their ability to work continuously for many hours makes them an industrial workforce.

There are two types of the reciprocating air compressors.

Single Stage Air Compressor

A single stage air compressor consists of one, two or three compression cylinders with the same bore size, in which the piston compresses the air against the head of the cylinder to increase its pressure and discharge it into the storage tank. Typically this type of compressor is used, where medium pressure air is required, such as pneumatic equipment operation, spray paint, atomizing fuel for a boiler, blow molding, the filtering process in the chemical industry and the drive of pneumatic nailers, staples and other similar types of machines.

Two Stage Air Compressors

The air is compressed twice before being sent to the two-stage air receiver tank. Atmospheric air is filtered and sucked into the low pressure cylinder (LP) via the inlet valve. The piston’s rotating movement in the cylinder compresses the air to increase its pressure. As compression raises the air temperature, it passes through an intermediate cooler (heat exchanger) where the water absorbs heat of the compressed air to cool it before sending it to a high pressure cylinder (HP) for additional compression. This is done to reduce the air temperature and increase the efficiency of the entire compression cycle. The bore of the high-pressure cylinder is lower than that of the LP cylinder and this design allows the pressure to be increased further, without increasing the performance for the compression stroke.

The Reciprocating air compressors depending on their design. They are:

• Reciprocating horizontal balancing resist piston water-cooled compressor – with this type of compressor, both the LP and HP cylinders are located opposite each other in the horizontally position and are driven by the same crankshaft, which is driven by an electric motor.

• Reciprocating vertical balancing resist water-cooled compressor – It is also two-cylinder compressor with high and low pressure cylinders located in the vertical direction, opposite each.

Reciprocating air compressors require a sturdy reinforced concrete foundation to minimize the vibration forces that are caused by reciprocating movement of the two pistons in the opposite direction. This type of air compressor is far from robust construction and its well-lubricated moving parts allow operators to operate it without stopping for a long time with minimum energy consumption and with fewer maintenance interruptions.

This type of compressor produces a pressure of up to 17.5 kg / cm² and several compression stages can be added to increase the final pressure accordance to individual needs.
